Core Vocabulary

Core Vocabulary is an approach that can be used for children diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech. This is a combined approach, including linguistic and motor characteristics. This approach is primarily for children that are relatively inconsistent in their errors. This intervention is focused on consistency, NOT accuracy.

Goal progression for this approach follows a hierarchy (sound, syllable, etc.,). The clinician should target 50 functional words, and establish the best production through practice at the phoneme and syllable level. The clinician can drill the best production in other activities as well.

According to research, frequency is recommended to be 2X/week. Duration is recommended to be about 30-40 minutes per session, and the clinician should target maximum trials per session (no specific number). A trained speech language pathologist is required for this approach.
